Which Of The 5 Great Lakes Vacations Is Best For You?

There are 5 great lakes but which one is the greatest? Well, one of the best places to visit is Lake Erie, just off the NYS Thruway on Interstate 90 in Westfield, NY, is a place many consider a wonderful tourist attraction. Not only Lake Erie, but nearby Chautauqua Lake provide the visitor with numerous options. Whether you are looking for fishing, boating, or just plain relaxing near a lake, you will find it here.

Recreation Around the Lakes

Besides Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake, the area boasts other lakes as well. There is Findley Lake, Cassadaga Lake and Bear Lake. For those who love the water and water sports, they should come prepared to swim, walk the beaches, canoe, sail, kayak, or water ski. Pontoon boats, power boats and jetskis are also great activites for summer visitors. Rentals are available for these activities.

These 5 great lakes are not the typical ones that are most often talked about but they are still great and great for all kinds of fishing too. The muskellunge is particularly popular. For more information about fishing in the 5 great lakes in this area click here.

Winter Around The Great Lakes

My question to visitors is, "Have they ever visited an area around one of the 5 great lakes in the winter time"? Have they ever heard of lake effect? Well, you really can't say that you have experienced a truly memorable trip to the great lakes until you have experienced a great lakes storm.

They are called the great lakes because of their size, it takes a while in the winter for them to freeze. Until they do, the surrounding areas often experience what is referred to as lake effect weather. In the winter it is always in the form of snow.

The most memorable great lakes storm in this area is by far the blizzard of 1977. I was a junior in high school, missed over a week of school due to snow days and saw more snow than I had ever seen before and ever care to again. It just snowed and snowed and snowed and snowed and snowed. Snow totals were calculated at over 7 feet. Winds were calculated at upwards of 70mph and wind chills as high as 60 degrees below zero. The area was considered a state of emergency and the National Guard was brought in to help clear snow. The cleanup lasted well into February.
