Chautauqua New York and Chautauqua Institution - Past and Present

Chautauqua New York is the home of Chautauqua Institution and

is a wonderful tourist attraction visited by several thousand

each summer. Its a place visited by individuals, couples and

families making it a great vacation for kids too.

Chautauqua, New York is located in the south west corner of New

York State. It is a scenic area surrounded by beautiful

Chautauqua Lake.

The First Chautauqua Summer

What is known as Chautauqua began in 1874 when the first

Chautauqua Assembly was held. The meeting was held mainly due to

concerns of Sunday School Teachers. Several topics were

discussed. Not long after these meetings took place, the

sessions

grew longer to include secular education, entertainment, science

and

language classes, music, social, political lectures and

historical themes. The religious core was still the main focus

but the rapid growth expanded and broadened the Chautauqua

Institution into what it is today.

Present Chautauqua

Presently, Chautauqua Institution is a beautiful and prosperous

summer resort. Much thought, money and time goes into making it

a very special place and preserving all that it is built upon.

The nine week summer session includes a mixture of work and

play. People end their days happy and energized, mentally and

physically, always ready to experience more the next day.

The beautiful and serene surroundings were and are today a place

to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and find

comfort, peacefulness and happiness. Some visitors coming from

the cities today see it as kind of a utopia as some did years

ago. Because of it's religious core, some even consider the

grounds to be a sacred place.

The location on Chautauqua Lake makes the Chautauqua experience

an even more pleasurable one when visiting the area. Fresh air

and sparkling water on warm sunny days give way to event filled,

starry, warm summer nights. People enjoy their lives here. They

cherish the moments they spend here. They respect the

regulations set forth so long ago of this being a place of peace,

and cheerfulness and of orderliness and ideality.
